There's a section of one of the Siege of Terra books (Warhawk maybe) where one lone female Skitarii and one lone guardsman are left trudging around in the ash and waste trying to survive and pick off traitors before they inevitably die. The Skitarii has a radium rifle and conveys to the guardsman that being near her is cooking him with rads, but he replies that he's just happy to have her company before he dies. When he's mortally wounded, he asks if she's pretty under her mask. She thinks of how she looks - eyelids removed, skin seared off years ago by radiation, all facial features cut off for being impractical... and decides to lie and nod for him. He dies with a smile on his face saying "Ahh, knew it".
