What’s wild and honestly disappointing to me is people saying, “If you can’t take care of a dog, how will you take care of a baby?” as if human beings are not allowed to reassess their circumstances and make different decisions when life changes. A dog and a child are not the same thing. A child is not a pet, and a pet is not a child. Comparing the two is strange enough, but using that comparison to judge someone’s future ability to be a parent is even stranger. The conversation should be about whether Ray will be loved and cared for by someone else who has time and capacity. If the answer is yes, then perhaps that’s where the concern should end. People pivot. Circumstances change. Priorities shift. Making a responsible decision based on your current reality is not a character flaw or failure.
