John himself said he wasn’t exactly fond of JJ's characterisation. Its understandable.

That is wild!!!! Especially how good their chemistry was filming.

They felt he was being a clown for the ratings, and making the black family appear foolish. Esther and John were always trying to get better scripts to make the black family look more respectable. Jimmy's foolishness made that impossible.
