Argentina are one of the only teams that almost refuse to use width. They play very narrow and keep forcing the game through the middle. There is a Diego Simeone element to it, but with more cunning and better football. Even when you counterattack against them, you cannot go straight through the centre because they immediately crowd it. And when Argentina have the ball there, their players think faster than everyone else. They pass quickly, bounce the ball off each other and change direction before the other team can react. They do not need much room because they are comfortable playing in a crowd. The middle of the pitch is basically their territory. They drag opponents into it, then move the ball too quickly for them to keep up. nd this way of playing is helped by Messi’s ability to carry the ball straight through the middle. He barely goes wide anymore. He stays central, draws several defenders toward him, and then either slips someone through or combines quickly with the players around him. Argentina’s whole narrow structure is built around the fact that Messi can still make the most crowded part of the pitch feel playable. This is a very Argentinian way of playing, culturally to where you get aggression in a box.
