“Woah he’s big” That black bear ain’t even that big considering some black bears I’ve seen. They ain’t grizzly size but they can get quite huge. That one seemed like a female or a younger one.

He didn't look that big to me. I moved to a house in the mountain years ago in the middle of January. The day after finally unloading the truck and trailer we got 30" of snow. I get call from the local PD asking me if I owned firearm, I said I intend to hunt, why? He tells me that the home across the road was a seasonal resident who has security cameras. He goes on to tell me that a bear had broken in through the a window just of the kitchen. They wanted to know if I felt confident enough to go check it out before they sent a guy all the way up where were were to deal with it. I suited up, grabbed my rifle and my shotgun and trudged across the road. I could see the window that was broken, and could hear the bear rummaging through the house. I confirmed there was a bear in the house, and asked what they wanted me to do about it. They told me two officers are on their way, if possible, stay there and keep an eye on the bear. I waited there for about 20 minutes, one officer showed up in a 4x4, with a high power rifle, he tells me "The best course of action is to shoot the bear in the house, if he gets out, we'll never get shot in him". Keep in mind this was someone's vacation home, a nice looking place at that. I suggested that maybe we run the bear out the way he came in and put some fear in him so he doesn't return. They were leaning toward just opening fire on the thing through the windows. As it stood at that point, the house needed a new window, and likely a new refrigerator. The bear was at the fridge, feasting on what it pawed out of the top drawer and freezer. I asked if they had keys, the one guy said "Yeah, but what idiot would go in there with a bear"? I took the keys, told him to watch the window in the kitchen, I opened the front door and make a bunch of racket, banging on a waste paper basket I found like a drum. The bear dove out the kitchen window over the sink, not the one he came in but he was out of the house. All I heard was a barrage of gunfire outside as they shot at the thing as it ran away. Not a one hit him. They both looked at me like I had a screw loose. I was holding a high power rifle and a large handgun, the bear was maybe 250 lbs tops. He wanted no part of me or anyone else, he was only looking for a meal, most of which he had already gotten. The shook my hand and said they'd be at the bar later on, and said stop by for a beer. I asked them what about the guys windows? They just shrugged and said I suppose he's got insurance. I went back to my place and cut a couple of plywood panels to cover the missing windows and called the PD back and told them to tell the guy his windows were boarded up. I didn't meet that neighbor for another few months, he showed up with case of expensive wine and $100 bill for the patch job. He had a guy replace both windows that week, and the fridge was out on the curb the next day. It became my new beer fridge in the garage complete with few scars and a broken handle and one drawer held together with super glue and packing tape. We never saw the bear again. They talked about the crazy guy who ran into a house with bear in it for years after that. They were all good guys, probably just bored in a small town with no action going on in the dead of winter. That bear was probably the only excitement they saw around there in months. I'm sure the homeowner was glad no one shot the bear to death in the house. A month after that happened some woman called to say she had a skunk in her garage, they sent rookie officer out, who promptly emptied his weapon on the thing, turning it into furry pizza atop her clothes dryer, half of it spread over the wall behind it. I was a block away or more and could still smell it a week later. I can't imagine what it was like in that house. He had to know what he was doing, I refuse to believe anyone is that dumb, at least that's what I keep telling myself all these years.
