Hey Matt, I've got a bus licence and bus driving experience. The "Retarder" (awful name I know, we used to call it the endurance brake) is a secondary braking system from your normal foot brake. It's used to slow heavy vehicles going downhill so the usual friction brakes don't die 😅. You can just take your foot off the accelerator and the bus starts to slow rather than coast. I believe there's different types, like engine-based in diesel engines, hydraulic-based for trains, and electric-based, but that's beyond my knowledge.

The thing about right on red is that you still have to make a full stop and check the road to your left to make sure you'll not be hit. You basically have to treat it like a stop sign.

9:55 the ideal reading of this rule is that if you approach a red light and you are turning right, you treat it as a stop sign as opposed to a light. You still come to complete stop, but you look and if you are clear to turm right, you are allowed to do so. Oddly enough, Buses are NOT allowed to do this. Most of them have a sticker on the back that even say it. Right next to the sticker that says they stop at all railroad crossings.

Twice Matt has called the mail drop-offs just "bins", but with the way he drives, I think the first one is really just rebar-reinforced concrete designed to look like the postal drop-off since no city I've been to has two of them side by side like that. Also, the thing on the front at 23:55 is to carry bicycles. Just because I can ride my bicycle 5 miles across town, doesn't mean I want to.

Matt, in the United States, you can turn right on a red light unless said otherwise. Sometimes there will be a sign that says “Trucks no right on red light” to prevent traffic jams.

Funny thing: Here in some places of México, right on red was banned because it causes a lot of accidents, to be honest i do believe that it's better that way since waiting 5 to 10 seconds is better than crashing your car :v

Right on red (and even left on red in some cases!) is one of the main reasons the US has so many pedestrian deaths.

In the U.S you have 'always' a "green arrow" (so it is called in germany). At a red traffic light you have to stop at the line, check if the road is free and then you are allowed to turn right. Just for right turns. Sometime you have a sign next to the traffic light which doesn't allow you to turn. Called 'No turn on red'-sign

Matt, not only can you turn right on red unless signage otherwise says you can't, but you can also turn left on red, provided you're turning from a one way street onto a one way street and your state doesn't forbid it

Right turns on red light still have to come to a stop at the light, yield right of way and pedestrians. Sometimes it will be indicated that you aren't allowed.
