Australia might have just become one of the most dangerous dark horses at World Cup 2026. After defeating Turkey 2-0 in their opening Group D match, the Socceroos shocked the football world with a performance that was far more impressive than the scoreline suggests. Turkey dominated possession, completed 646 passes, attempted 30 shots, delivered 28 crosses, and won 8 corners — yet Australia walked away with a clean sheet and all three points. In this video, we break down the tactical masterclass from Tony Popovic, Patrick Beach's incredible World Cup performance on just his third international appearance, Harry Souttar's defensive leadership, Connor Metcalfe's decisive impact, and the emergence of Nestory Irankunda, who became the youngest Australian ever to score at a FIFA World Cup. Was this simply a great opening-night victory? Or did Australia just announce themselves as a genuine threat to the rest of Group D and perhaps the entire tournament? Watch until the end as we analyze the records, statistics, tactical details, key moments, and why this Australia team may be far scarier than most people realize. ⚽ Subscribe for more World Cup 2026 analysis, football documentaries, tactical breakdowns, and international football stories. #Australia #Socceroos #WorldCup2026 #FIFAWorldCup #AustraliaVsTurkey #Turkey #NestoryIrankunda #PatrickBeach #ConnorMetcalfe #HarrySouttar #TonyPopovic #FootballAnalysis #FootballDocumentary #WorldCup #Football

Turkiye knows how hard it is to cross a Beach now.
Never underestimate Australia at sport
This Australia team is genuinely scary. They looked very solid at the back, and sharp on transition. One of the best defensive displays i've seen in recent world cup history
The scary part is they'll be even better in 4 years.
Australia to USA & Paraguay: “None of you seem to understand. I’m not locked in Group D here with you. You’re locked in Group D with me”
As an australian, I approved this much smoke being blown up our arse
Australia's defence was rock solid, and their goalkeeper turned into prime Neuer.
Australia football fans: This is what we’ve tried to tell you!!!!!
What I find amusing, Italy has a revered defensive style which is famous for being impenetrable. However, when Australia does this, we are mocked
Position is more important than possestion
It amazes me how quickly a lot of people were to write of the socceroos. We're ranked 26th in the world FFS. Turkey is ranked 22nd...
Johnny Warren would be smiling.🇦🇺
I love it when people underestimate Australia
Never heard of a coach not having both the captain and vice-captain in their starting line-up. Very brave call.
Better analysis than espn well done
Australia has played like this for decades. Whilst the defending skills have definitely improved, I think the biggest difference now is they didn't panic. That was THE biggest change I saw. The defemders all looked so calm. Less twitching. Less jerking at every feint. Less frustrated legs jutting out and giving away penalties. They were defending like they were doing some incredible simple task that takes focus, like reading an important document. (I'm just a casual, but being Australian, I've naturally seen them regularly on TV since they failed to qualify against Argentina in 1993 for the 94 WC)
That's how Popovic coached Western Sydney Wanderers to win the Asian Champions League
Its Tobruk all over again
Turkey basically had all the gear, but no idea😂
Perfect explanation, your details were as good as Australia’s 2-0 win. Excellent
