6 minute drive in an urban center can equate to a 15-20 minute walk. 6 minute drive in the middle of nowhere can equate to a 1-2 hour walk. lol

and it ain’t gonna be a lovely, peaceful walk. it’s gonna be on the border of a busy road, no sidewalk, cars zooming right next to you ☹️

Depressing how true this is. Another thing that often happens is that it's faster to walk somewhere than to take public transportation because there aren't enough buses or they're not frequent enough. I once lived in a city where it would take 30 minutes to walk downtown and 45-60 minutes to get there by bus

Perception is different in walking communities. My mother-in-law once told me that a store was around the block. So 10 straight blocks later I wasn't happy.

This is very true! The tiny grocery store in my rural town is 8 minutes away by car but 1 hour and 14 minutes away if you walk it. Oh, and there are no sidewalks for about a third of that. And no public transportation. So you better find yourself a car.

Not if you walk on the interstate, then its only 20 minutes + a 3 month hospital stay.

Meanwhile in Bangkok, a 6 minute train ride = a 20 minute walk and a 2 hour drive, no thanks to Bangkok's nightmarish traffic.😂

I get this. I live rural. It's a 15-20 minute drive to my doctor's office, depending on traffic and sheep and tractors count as traffic, but a 5 hour walk.

6 minutes walk here in Brazil you go by 4 blocks, schools, stores, pharmacy, bakery, everything lol and its still a simple family neighborhood

Highway speed of 60 mph is 6 miles in 6 minutes. Yep, two hours walking.

Friendly reminder that this is just the symptom, not the cause.

Same in Canada: my closest grocery store is 13 minute drive, or 4.5 hour walk. The bus is 1 hour, and only available on Friday LOL

This is honestly the hardest thing to describe to overseas co-workers. American distance math is kinda relative, when we hear "six minute drive" it totally depends on where you are as to whether that is walkable or not. In a low-traffic city, probably not. I always assume "six minutes away" is unwalkable and requires a car since that's the type of city I live in.

I lived 6 miles by highway from a shop i worked at. Took 10 minutes max. When my car broke down, i had to take the bus. Took 2 hrs

I made the same mistake one day after a job interview, it was a 20 minute drive so I thought it'd be an hour or two walk. 5 and a half hours later I finally made it home.

I worked in a coffee shop and we had a lot of American tourists come in. One asked for directions to somewhere, I can't remember where but it was maybe a 3-5 minute walk at most. He said 'i think I'll just get a cab' and I'm like 'sir, the nearest cab depot is like a 2 minute walk, you'd be faster just walking to your destination, and with the one way system in place in the city, it'll take you at least 10-15 minutes to get to your destination and cost you a fortune' but he wasn't having it, he'd decided he was getting a cab

Tiny town problems 😂😂😂 Big cities are the exact opposite, a 2hr drive is literally a 6min walk 😅

I think the speed limit plays an important part too
