I am not a football fan or neither good at it, but at least from the little I play in my backyard with friends for fun, these are sometimes the most difficult balls to catch. You see them and you even have enough time to react, even you have already decided within yourself to catch the ball, but there's that weight that makes you lazy

The keeper should have tried to save the ball after the shot. There was no power only placed and close enough to give an attempt. Im not saying he would have saved it , but to show courage, determination, and fighting spirit.
