This is pretty much the only reason I have a Monzo card, had this even on a small SPAR shop, it showed how much it would have been. Even in a £20 transaction the difference was silly.

In some countries - the rate they will give you is worse than a good card, but better than a bad card. Then, if you're using a "good" card, you still pick the foreign currency. But with the "bad" card, you may be better off. It almost comes down to how up-to-date you are with the exchange rate, and the mental arithmetic of the rate.
