Destiny 2's final update is here, and it's the one players spent ten years asking for. Sit with that for a moment. A Destiny 3 petition is past 350,000 signatures, stream chats have turned into protest sites, and Marathon picked the worst possible week to stumble, but none of it has reached the room at PlayStation where this was decided. The game industry is ran by business people that have no right being here
Remember when game companies wanted to make games people would want to play? Instead of looking for ways to force people into their unwanted games?
Not Aztecross getting quoted verbatim in a Bellular video bro
It's not even maintenance mode. Corporate decisions are becoming even more corporate.
The patch notes from the Last update actually prove the devs were not only listening, but actively developing fun and player first content. It really genuinely was upper management ruining the game. The devs were actually listening, but they’re weren’t allowed to do anything
If there's anyone to blame, blame the executive suite. The dollar sign screwed us all.
I’m so early I could play D2 before they sunset the content I paid for
We just want it to be known what Sony and Bungie are throwing away
I'm a Warframe player. I have never played too much of destiny but I'm downloading it now to support that at least.
It sucks. I got on for the first time in a year, upgraded all of my most used crafted weapons to the tier system, got a cool finisher from a bright engram, looked at all the cool new monument armor, went through the returning weapons, played a matched of SRL and died laughing when I choked the race, and tried out some new weapons in onslaught. I had so much fun yet kept thinking to myself that they probably could’ve avoided this situation if they had done this last year and overdeliver instead of charging 40$ for a bunch of reskinned weapons, a half assed tier system that made all of your weapons useless so they could drip feed recycled weapons, ball abilities, a bland menu that made 95% of the content pointless, and a gameplay grind loop that was just doing the same 2 missions over and over again.
Over 100k D2 players on just Steam alone at the launch of this expansion. Beat out Marathon's peak player count.
There was never a game who's end was so... confusing, to so many people. I think everyone was like "Wait, what?" with the announcement and with the fact that D3 was not a thing, this just feels wrong, like it shouldn't have happened.
Couple of things here. This final QoL patch is full of the feature ideas that were probably prototyped but leadership would never greenlight because they couldn't see a path towards monetizing them without a lot of work. I have seen countless QoL features scrapped on the games I worked on over the years not because the work they represented was extensive or even expensive but because management couldn't see a direct path to it increasing revenue. These features would have been back burnered forever and maybe one or two come out in an expansion if the devs could convince management to let them do it. Second thing. The writing was on the wall as soon as Sony took over. I had been hoping they would do better this time around but Sony has had a modus operandi for decades at this point in regards to MMOs and companies. They buy out a company, sack most of the staff, bleed the game dry with minimal investment or upkeep and them use that money to buy another studio after they shut it down. They did it with huge franchise MMOs like Matrix Online where they basically stripped the dev team down to a single person eventually who hadn't even been part of initial development at Monolith. They did it to the original Planetside game and it was a miracle that they even decided to greenlight Planetside 2. Final thing. The D2 devs were saying for years about how rough and difficult the engine was to work with. They could have greenlit D3 at some point back when they were riding high and having a lot of good vibes and press from people. Right after Forsaken would probably have been the best time for them to get that approval and to make sure they built D3 in an engine that didn't make it hell on them and that would basically allow them to bring over/rebuild from existing assets everything they could from D1 and D2. Instead they pushed to try and eek out every tiny gain they could but that was always the problem of them trying to please masters and overlords. For a long time it was trying to please Activision and fight unrealistic targets set by them. Then they eventually ended up in Sony's hands but it had bled out too much by then. They'd already made bad decisions and cut things out before that. Adding seasonal activities that also eventually were scrapped and disappeared also just didn't help them maintain either. In all I think the problem D2 always suffered from was that people basically wanted more D1. They wanted the same persistent updates and feel from D1 and a growing game. Instead they got periodic content removals and lockouts, they got added content eventually but at the cost of things that were interesting. They gutted their new player experience time and again to the point that anybody new now just has no jumping off point to understand what is going on. They misread what people actually wanted out of the game and it honestly shows.
They should have done what guild wars did; remaster destiny 1 for a steam release, started working on destiny 3 before the need to sunset content from d2 was needed. Then they could sell 3 games with a coherent storyline.
Amazing CEOs will throw away game that HAS demand for the game that has none. Destiny 2 just went over 168k on Steam.
At the end of the day, I think this was a long time coming. Bungie thought they were back in 2019 and could hop ship from Sony after a bad release
Marathon has a player retention crisis, the F2P weekend did nothing. D2 has 160k payers at the time of writing, Marathon 24k. Sure, that's just steam. Where by (Bungies own admission) 70% of Marathons player base is
They messed up their game so bad, that they can't unvault the content that they took away, and that players paid for. WOW.
As of right now, steam alone spiked from 3k players, to a 24hr peak of 167k. Imagine if devs focus on what people want to play, rather than focusing on milking the players for every cent, sunsetting content, and ignoring what players want for the last 10years. Yep.
D2 already sitting at almost double marathons peak.
