"Just because something makes you uncomfortable, does not mean it's morally wrong." Thank you for saying this, more people need to internalize it.
Adam driver’s mood swings and intensity in her stories reminds me of Kristen Stewart’s comments about how you only see male method actors doing volatile crazy shit because they feel a need to masculinize a career seen as “feminine.” I don’t see it as a quirky theater guy thing, but a toxic theater male thing. Her account gives him some grace and is humanizing, but definitely makes him come off as someone who’s a bit up his own ass that I wouldn’t feel totally safe around.
One of my favorite things in your videos is the delight in your voice when saying "close quote" after citing something amazing, like "wasn't that good?"
Dunham’s problems really do go back to the phrase “we should all know less about each other”
I also have endometriosis and it’s actually an inflammatory disease where cells SIMILAR to the uterus lining grows wherever the fuck it wants. So unfortunately, a hysterectomy doesn’t take away the problem since they aren’t actually endometrium cells. The name causes so much misinformation
Finally watched girls all the way through and i thought the entitlement and unlikeability of her character is way overstated. The average male sitcom lead is more selfish and unlikable than Hannah who i found pretty well-rounded for a highly flawed tv character. Thank you for making this, she is not above criticism ofc but gets wayyy too much due to misogyny
Oh snap, wasn't expecting an Olay shoutout - pleasant surprise
i just kinda had a negative association with lena dunham in my mind without really knowing why, so it was very illuminating to learn that i basically got psyopped into thinking lena dunham was a horrible, irredeemable person. great video as always
one of the things i think i read into more than you may have is the violence between adam driver's behavior. if a man screamed in my face, no matter how theater-kid-y, that would be terrifying.
I’m about to be SO SAT FOR THIS when I get off work girl you don’t even KNOW
Re. "Lena admits to cheating on Jack": They were on a BREAK!!!
“I am sick, and people don’t like me. If you can deal with those two things we can be together. He would tell her later ‘I knew that those were just stories you were telling yourself’.” That hit me 🥲
I’m a student in sexology and in our practice we never qualify children under 12 as sexual offenders, we prefer to call it problematic sexual behaviour and, most of the time, with good intervention and education, these behaviours do not continue onto adulthood. I feel very uncomfortable with people coming to that strong of a conclusions on that young of a child.
Her disclosing being abused by a babysitter makes her behavior with her sibling make even more sense. I remember when that story broke I was working at a survivor center and I immediately was like… and no one is concerned that she was being victimized??
wow, honestly my knowldege of lena dunham was the thing with her sibling and the situationship with the guy from fun and lorde. I almot didnt watch this cause i didnt wanna see someone i felt was a manipulative person be defended. but i'm glad i did, i didnt know much about the situations, i took face value some tumblr posts years ago
I remember around the time the controversy over Lena's story about her sibling came out, I somehow found myself watching a YouTube video on the subject. I no longer remember who created it, but it was a guy who seemed convinced that what Lena did was definitely sexual assault, but he was more ambivalent over another story of hers, where she only recently realized that a male sexual partner had raped her, because he removed his condom during sex without her consent, and the people she was telling the story to didn't think it was funny. Then the video maker said something that not only made his bias click for me, but really gave me insight into how men aren't held accountable for SA. He started more of his hemming and hawing over whether or not the condom removal was actually rape by saying, " Don't get me wrong, rape is the worst thing ever, but-" And right there, I got it. Rape is the worst thing ever. Therefore, if the person hearing about the crime doesn't perceive it as "The Worst Thing Ever", then it probably wasn't rape. The story about one child in inappropriately touching another child got a more visceral reaction out of him, whereas the condom story probably elicited more of a, "Men, am I right?" kind of response. Like the shitty things men do sexually are just so average, so mundane, so expected, that there's little to no shock value when it happens. If anything, it's the woman's fault for being surprised that she consented to sex when these things just HAPPEN, but it doesn't make the guy a RAPIST. But the childhood story? That's some Man Bites Dog shit right there. And also, Lena Dunham being The Worst Thing Ever just feels...right in a way. So that's probably it. Ugh, I haven't thought about that in a long time. I feel gross.
Dunham's oversharing may be a facet of her OCD -- compulsive confession is a very common symptom. I have it, and I've done a lot to work on it, but still get urges to inappropriately tell people what's going on in my head or things that I've done. The motivations can vary, and the feelings associated come in flavors. Someone compulsively confessing may want reassurance that what they're doing / thinking is forgivable; they may want to provide the "most honest" view of themselves to others; or it can simply be that keeping these thoughts in your head is too much for you alone to bear. OCD is so much more complicated than pop cultural portrayals make it out to be, and I've unfortunately come to realize that the actual experience and symptoms of OCD are incredibly judged by most people.
The letter from Dunham's friend moved me to tears. What a beautiful expression of love for both his child and his friend. And as someone who has been trying to press creativity out of myself in very stressful and hard times, I thank you for your message at the end Siobhan. Perhaps if I stop trying to beat it out of myself, in time a song will come. Thank you.
Lena Dunham is the voice. Of this generation. Or a generation.
Another thing I notice about people getting "womanned" is it seems like people can have complicated feelings about men, or even separate their feelings from the men's work, in a way that they can't for women. Like I don't think everyone who calls Woody Allen great are like super stoked about his personal life, but if he was a woman, there's no question in my mind that he'd be tossed out as if he was never worth anything in the first place.
