He was incredibly professional, disciplined and industrious. He provided the defensive balance was tactically astute, defensively reliable, went on the overlap and delivered good crosses and was assertive, commanding and had excellent chemistry with his teammates. He was very solid and very important for the team and gave a solid platform for the more gifted and flamboyant players to shine. Fergie wouldn't have kept him all those years if he wasn't good. I think in a later era, they had lots of wingers converting to fullback so the natural fullbacks don't look as impressive attacking-wise but the proper fullbacks were more balanced. At the risk of repeating, Fergie wouldn't have kept him so long if he wasn't too quality and always consistent and reliable.

He always gave his all and was actually better than people think on the ball. He didn't give it away cheaply, ran all day to support Beckham and was very tough to beat.
