My 2 cents on the conversation with the girls? I lowkey understand what they mean by that sometimes bad things happen as a "lesson", but for ME I believe that the bad things happen to me become a stepping stone for me to get closer to Him. There is personal things that have happened to me that have brought me closer to Him and if it wasn't for those horrible things happening that I wouldn't know of a God that reveals Himself (e.g. as a God who comforts and heals) even in the most horrible situations. Hence Romans 8:28 says "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." ❤
