I’m a wildlife conservationist! That is a round tailed ground squirrel! Most commonly found in the southwestern part of the US and the northwestern part of Mexico! So those are burrowing squirrels kinda like a prairie dog’s small cousin. they live in small little colonies and usually if the hair is thinning around the nipples that means she’s nursing! So she probably already had her litter and they are staying underground until they get a little older. She could also be pregnant again. Squirrels typically mate and have litters twice a year and it’s common for them to get pregnant while nursing. What’s cool about these squirrels is they burrow instead of getting in trees like the squirrels that are most commonly found in the US. They eat mostly vegetation and that’s also where they get most of their water intake since they live where it’s hard to find water. Another cool thing they do is you know how bears hibernate during the winter and sleep for long periods of time? They do that in the hottest part of the summer! They’ll stay down in their burrows and sleep most of the time to beat out the heat!
