Stop signs do also have that shape because it is important that people always know what to do even if they can't read the sign. This can be due to weather conditions for example. As no other sign has this shape you always know that you have ro stop when you see a traffic sign with eight sides.

Spain very recently adopted the same exact US design for the STOP signs. Previously they used the CCRIGE font, now is Highway Gothic

Papyrus font for the stop signs would be pretty funny

Comic sans would only make sense if the stop sign is blue.

3 is definitely the way to go. Shake your phone a bit to mimic motion blur. It's the only one still clearly legible.
