How do we LOSE knowledge? The same way Marvel comics got worse: Good artists, writers, and editors got let go to bring in the DIE employees, many of whom had almost no experience.
McDonald's to Woke Devs: "Welcome home! Now put the fries in the bag."
I’ll be honest, I’m finding more enjoyment in solo developer games and small teams over anything AAA produced in the last 5 years.
Completely disagreed. The AAA studios are on a bubble, it will collapse and force massive consolidation. Corporate environments can't produce good, creative games because they lack vision and can't tolerate risk. From now on, they will be 5+ years late to new trends. You can't make AAA bucks that way. BUT, the golden age of games were created by teams we'd call "small studio size" now. It's just a return to a healthier state of the industry.
Stormgate was NOT made by the original developers of Starcraft. It was made by people who worked on Starcraft 2, but not from the beginning of the product. They made extensive claims on the legacy of Starcraft that they didn't deserve.
"People will be fine with owning nothing just like people are fine with netflix instead of owning DVD's." Except I just cancelled netflix and bought star trek TNG and DS9 DVDs because streaming is so terrible now.
The problem is the people who use to make fun of video games are now in charge of video games.
I unsubscribed from Bellular when he ran defense for Sweet Baby, and never looked back.
I consider budget to be a skill issue. If you are a great indie dev team, then you don't need a big budget. It's clearly a skill issue.
The games industry did this to itself. Let it burn on the bonfire of its own vanity. What rises from the ashes will be better.
Godzilla minus one is a clear cut example you literally don’t need a lot of money to make a feasible product to consumers
You know what’s funny is that I’m in the music industry and it’s happening here too. I think across all creative industries things are looking bad cause of greed
Game industry is screwed - no. AAA games are screwed - yes.
games need to be made by gamers, and not answer to corporate or other interests. this is how it would be in an ideal world.
Tried to get into the game industry as a composer wanting to make music for games, but reality hits hard when it’s not financially stable, probably going to do a career change.
"Gaming is collapsing and here is why it's your fault, the consumer."
In the 80s the land value of Japan was worth more than the entire US.
The problem with AI is that it eliminated entry level jobs. Entry level jobs are the first link in a... not very long chain. Entry level jobs are meant to teach someone who already has basic skills in the field. Those entry level employees learn from the seniors they work under, they are taught, corrected, and shown, how to do something correctly. Once entry goes out, seniors no longer have a pool of people they can bestow knowledge into. No entry level, will turn into no middle-level... and eventually, when the seniors or best people in the positions leave, then there is no one with the skills to fill them. The passing down of knowledge is a crucial component of the chain, and once that breaks down, you'll get quality drops even more than we see now. The current LLM's are not AI. An entry level person won't know what he's doing with AI, especially if they are just putting in a prompt, and then copying the result. They won't know how to correct the results, they won't know why something is broken or doesn't work. A simple task for a senior to come see and point, saying "This is wrong, and this is why" takes 5 minutes. An LLM prompted by an entry level person can result in hours of wasted time on basic issues. We already are seeing the degradation happening. Entry level jobs are posted, requiring "6 years experience" for junior/entry positions. A job meant to teach you, is requiring you already worked to a mid or even senior level, to even be considered. You have to have the skills you are meant to learn over the years in a position you are applying for. Going to a University or a College doesn't count anymore.
Quality > Quantity
Games just aren’t fresh like they used to be. Everything is just a reskin of the same old stuff.
