Instead of taking his words seriously and calling him a liar when he says he loves you, tease him back and say, "Having fun, are you?" He gives a much more amused response and looks positively tickled. Which I think shows his budding affections more.

A different option in #6 is one of my favorites. When you tell him he's sweet and silly, he just exclaims, "I AM!" I think that we pay so much attention to the fact that he uses humor to deflect that we can overlook how funny he really is. Our boy has sass for days, and not just to hide behind

I was aiming for his romance, but then I got the line. “You’ll be my friend? I’ve never had a friend before.” And I had to pivot to someone else. Astarion deserves a ride or die psychopath with a heart of gold, and I was proud to give it to him. (I was reformed dark urge)

I think #1 is one of if not my favourite example of Neil's talent! It's not as dramatic as everything later down the road but it's just. How during his confession he keeps trying to use humour to deflect, to act like what he's feeling is not big deal... nor are your own feelings about his actions.. until he can't, until the intensity that he's actually feeling slips out. How it's not just 0 - 100, it starts off so subtly. How freaked out he is by losing control over the one thing he has left, & how he defends himself by making light of OTHER people's emotions too!! goddddd it's so good & as a gen z I notice that same thing everywhere in people my age. Covering everything up with irony & jokes & making fun of others for not doing the same. I struggle with it too. Classically there's the walls you put up when you've been betrayed, fear of the enemy knowing your weak points, fear of being hurt there again. The fear of vulnerability *leading* to pain later on. But for so many people vulnerability in of itself is the fear. To admit to being affected by anything, to be genuine, regardless of what, is scary; what if its' embarrassing, or unlikeable? "It's not that deep bro!" It feels a flaw. Astarian isn't afraid of someone finding out his weaknesses via being genuine, he's afraid that to be genuine at all is to appear weak. Perhaps there's an element too of how *human* vulnerability is. Through his story Larian is so wonderful at reminding us that vulnerability is no flaw, it's a power! What's that quote, bravery isn't having no fear, it's acting in spite of it. I say it's one step further; bravery is to look fear in the eyes & acknowledge its' existence.
