This Food Court in Kuantan Proves that Trust can be Rebuilt

Activism

A working food court is quietly reshaping what recovery and reintegration can look like Kak Lia has lived drug-free for 15 years, yet her journey back into society remains far from easy. For people in recovery like her, the barrier is rarely a lack of will. It is the walls that go up when their history becomes known. Social reintegration, after all, depends just as much on whether society is willing to embrace them. In Komited Malaysia’s Kacik 1998 Food Court, Kak Lia and others are proving themselves in their daily interaction with the public, preparing and serving food. Doctors and nurses from the hospital next door also enjoy dining here, which speaks louder than any awareness campaign ever could. One year on, ten individuals have found employment and, with it, a place in the wider society. The walls, slowly but surely, are coming down.
