His wings were crippled, in the comics, and Apocalypse had Sinister give him those metal wings to bind him to his cause. Like what they did to Wolverine when he became a horseman, mental conditioning to keep him loyal. When he broke free, he still looked like he was a son of Apocalypse. When his metal wings were damaged, you find out the wings had another purpose. Restoration of his original crippled wings. I remember Marrow kept one of his feathers, as she felt his white wings were beautiful, unlike herself. When he shed the metal wings, and the white feathers were revealed once again, he soared in the sky, flapping and flying, with absolute joy in his eyes. He was no longer Archangel the mutant hero. He was Angel again.
