Love the video, never had a clue that there that many devices available out there :) I have to say the truth, I care more about latency and audio, mic pass through as my main computer is my server :)

Video idea: Pairing one of these IP KVMs with a hotkey-enabled HDMI switch for a complete 10-inch rack solution. The current market forces us to choose between remote access and local hotkey convenience; a guide on merging them affordably would be incredible!

I built pikvm with some VGA hats etc and added 4x HDMI/USB splitter and 1 pikvm covers my 3 servers and 1 router - 2 years ago it cost me around 100 in total. Connected over Tailscale I have access to everything from everywhere - cannot be more happy now

Ahhh, the JetKVM. I ordered 2 and managed to receive a perfect 100% defect rate — both units dead on arrival. Impressive consistency, really. I reached out to get them fixed, and after a few months of waiting, they sent me a single motherboard. One. To repair one of the two broken units. Generous. Can't say I'd recommend the experience. I've since moved to GL-iNet, and — to my great surprise — they actually just work. Rock solid. Turns out that's an option.

At some point if you're need a few of these things, the costs tip towards the big boys like a Raritan 64 port KVMs

I have PiKVM with a spare pi4, USB HDMI converter, and Amazon powered USB hub with a hacky old USB hard drive cable through a USB-C adapter to power the Pi and connect to the target's USB. It's enough to remote manage boxes though OS version upgrades which is my primary use case. These could potentially be less cumbersome.

I have a Sipeed nano and the most useful feature for me by far is the little tie in board for controlling power and reset. When my server locks up I can force reboot it. I use the actual K, V, and M parts almost never. Handy tools to have around for sure.

We used to purchase Raritan KVM units where the proprietary cables/dongles were like $250 each, and the KVM head unit was thousands of dollars. Seeing the array of options available here is truly impressive, especially the ones that can come in the PCI form factors. We use these types of remote access tools (as well as the server based IPMI/ILO/Xclarity) on a daily basis since we administer worldwide infrastructure, and when something gets wedged or we need to upgrade/reinstall the OS, it’s a lot cheaper than a plane ticket. Plus you can do off hours work really easily when the server you are administering is in a location where the work day is over. Yes, of course security is a concern and you do need to really consider it, especially since plenty of these come with easily findable default usernames and passwords. We have separate designated management networks for these types of devices that are really locked down tightly, as well as compartmentalized credentials, and if they support it, a tie-in with Active Directory for authentication and group management.

Thx for including KVM-GO in the USB lane. Glad the USB-C single-cable power worked for your server runs. Heard you on the app setup friction. Hope to say hi again at Open Sauce booth 260180 😃

It would be cool to see a setup of the security measures you take/recommend for these IPKVMs!
