Mexican here. The protesters are a syndicate of teachers that have demands like wanting more wages, and they have been ignored by like the last 4 governments. But yes, a lot of people are not excited for the World Cup mainly because the government is prioritizing the foreigners over the locals. They had 8 years to renew the city and they started months ago, wasting lost of money in shitty “aesthetic” renovations instead of actually fixing public transport or dealing with other important issues. Also people feel like right now it’s not the time for a World Cup with all the corruption and cartel violence
