Not a football trainer (musician), just a FM player for decades: I think that football sim. PC game well illustrated that you have to adopt your tactics for your players skills and performance and not its inverse... (had to change tactics many times when out of quality players by injured or banned), but this video reflects on that tactics adopted for the odd rules anno, not just the players... thank you for the historic review..

I think the latest step to be mentioned(early 20s) is not the 3-4-3 rather than the 4-2-3-1, adapted as 3-2-5/3-1-6 during build up with either the number 6 or 1 of the 2 full backs acting as 3rd CB helping with playing out of defense build up

There are numerous contemporary newspaper reports of Sheffield teams playing passing formations from 1861 onwards, so the whole premise of this video is incorrect. The passing game started and was developed by the numerous teams playing the game across the city which then spread outwards when they played other teams from other cities. There are plenty of match reports from the time which back this up.

Brazil's asymmetrical play will always be my favorite. Europe is so systemic, even tiki taka is a way to systematize spontaneity. Nothing can beat the endless creativity of Brazilian play

I guess that the pioneer of the currently popular 3-4-2-1 flexible system was Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the 2008 J.League season. The manager at the time was Mihailo Petrović. That system spread throughout the J.League and has now been inherited by the current Japanese national team.

Great video, but maybe you forgot to ajax formation 3133 in 90s. Even Championship Manager appreciate it.

Great video. Wish we got more from the 4-3-3 section tho & less tikitaka.

Ancelotti created the 4-4-2 diamond? That's probably why France played in a 4-4-2 diamond during most of the 1980s, twenty years before Ancelotti became a coach....

Awesome video, man! I'd like to point out that this 3-5-2 prominent on the 2010's was used by Brazilians National team to win the World Cup in 2002. The system was never used before on our National team but Felipe Scolari adopted it to leverage the exceptional stamina of our full backs Roberto Carlos and Cafu.

Very good summary but remember when watching the game the system used also reflects the players available to play a system, the nature of the opposition and the stage of the game. The nature of the players can reflect a squad inherited by a coach, injuries and so on. Coaches will adapt for games depending on whether they think they have spotted a weakness in a team, whether they are home or away and so on. It’s also quite common to see away teams begin by using a deep block and gradually opening up as the game progresses.
