Breaking Down Tuchel's WEIRD England Squad!

Two 11s is the wrong way to look at it. Tuchel has picked his starting 11. His impact subs. His utility players. His leaders. There's a space for every single player with that thought process. I have no issue with the squad he has picked.

I know Foden, Palmer, TAA are getting the attention, but the omission of Lewis Hall is CRAZY to me, he's been one of the best fullbacks in the league this season

I'm a Newcastle fan and I can't overstate how insane it is that Livramento who's been injured and out of form all season is in the squad, but Hall who's our player of the season (it's either him or Bruno G) and who is nominated for young player of the season isn't. Absolutely baffling decision.

Only shock for me is Hall missing out. IMO Palmer should be in as he is a game changer off the bench, but not a shock that he’s missed out given this season. On the other side of things, players like MGW clearly deserve to be in, but equally probably wouldn’t have made a big impact either way (may be harsh though).

People asked for a high level coach rather than a people pleaser, that's what he's doing. The ideas around a leadership group and not overloading positions are not as sexy to us as picking the premier league English all star squad but that hasn't proven to work for us in past tournaments. As always there are some disappointed guys and I certainly don't agree with every selection but let's get behind this team next month 🦁🦁🦁

If you said to me a year ago that Carlton Palmer wasn't in the squad, I'd have said 'but he's been great for Grantham Town!'

Look what happened against Japan. O’Reilly got exposed. Want to start him? Fine. But not having Lewis hall as second choice is the single most confusing thing I’ve ever seen.

He's not looking for the best players, he's looking for the right players, ones that fit into the system and bring the right culture to the squad. For far too long England have picked players based on reputation and we haven't won anything. I don't see why everyone is so up in arms, it looks like a well balanced squad to me.

I see the vision.

This is the first time in my lifetime of 30 years that an England manager has built a team by trying to build a team instead of just picking the best players on paper. This is arguably the best opportunity we have ever had to win a trophy.

I was initially also outraged by the England squad, however having mulled over it I think I see where I think Tuchel is coming from. First of all, none of the players would be starting players in a consensus England starting XI. The only potential exception would be Harry Maguire, but I think it was generally accepted that it would be Konsa & Guehi starting, so (still extremely important) but we are talking about impact/bench/squad players. Harry Maguire, specifically, he's a comfortable ball playing CB who also can have a impact in both boxes at the end of the game, Tuchel has esentially picked Quansah to cover the mobile ball playing CB - (who has had a great season in a different league, something England fans always clamour about) and as much as I'd prefer Maguire, Burn can cover the tall; lump it in the box at the end of the game aspect. To clarify, I would have picked Maguire, but considering the profiles picked I don't think its as egregious as it first seems. Lewis Hall, again he's not starting over O'Reilly - and it gets forgotten but he has been in and out of the Newcastle team at times this season. But he is a top top player, essentially Livramento has been picked over him as a like for like (who can play both RB and LB) and then Spence as a tall different option and different profile & Burn as another different profile - you can disagree but its not something to be up in arms about. Henderson, this is ridiculous he should not be going. And Yes I would have taken TAA. Madueke, this is one which I would not have taken but looking at the LW profile of Gordon/Rashford they're explosive and Madueke offers that on the right, I would have liked to see a Palmer/Gibbs-White but you have that profile in Rogers and Eze, again I don't think you can be mad about that. Toney, your 3rd choice striker being one of the best penalty takers in the world I think is enough - and yes its the Saudi league but he's on form. Welbeck would've been nice but if we got to a penalty shootout I know I'd be glad to have Toney there

Having both Spence and Livramento ahead of Hall is criminal. The whole purpose of taking a versatile player is to have cover in multiple positions with fewer players. Taking both of them defeats the purpose

A bit nerve wracking to leave so many good players at home but when I look at the squad I see a clear tactical vision with the right players to carry it out. Couldn’t say the same about Southgate’s squad 2 years ago. Is that not what we brought in Tuchel to do?

Honestly don't understand how Spence is anywhere near the squad with the likes of Shaw, Hall, Skelly and Mitchell. Honestly baffling

Some of the quibbles are fair and some are just people being obtuse. "how is Madueke ahead of Palmer" I mean they are completely different players. Madueke is a pacey 1v1 toucline winger, Palmer is not. He wants wingers who run and dribble and who compliment Kane, not Attacking midfielders playing wide who will spend the whole game trying to come in and step on Kane's toes. There is no reason to take 5 no10s. If you are going to argue someone over Madueke, it's Bowen, not Palmer and Gibbs-White and whoever. Some guys won't even play and are there for vibes and that's fair because it's 26 players man. The real question marks for me are Wharton and Trent because they have a skillset that this squad looks light on, both can break a game open with their passing and Wharton especially I think is very questionable absence. I would have taken Maguire but he would not start anyway. It's not a big deal. Wouldn't have taken Spence but he's versatile enough...would rather Hall but O'Reilly has the shirt soooo whatever. If O'Reilly is injured, I have concerns buttttt he probably just prefers Livramento there anyway. People are mostly crying about guys who wouldn't get significant minutes anyway, and honestly you are better off leaving egos at home if you aren't planning on starting them. Even Toney man, who cares, he is there to play 40 minutes and maybe take a penalty. A couple head scratchers maybe but he's picked a cohesive squad that can work together and have a good group atmosphere. I like Gibbs-White but he is not ahead of Bellingham, or Rogers, and he can't play wide, so what would be the point? This isn't about declaring who is best, or who has had the best season. It's just about picking a squad that can win and he definitely has done that. If England fall short it's not because they didn't take a 4th 10.
