One name that should also be mentioned is the one of Frank Rijkaard. He played with Cruijff at Ajax, won the euros in 88, won the cl in 95 and laid the foundation for Pep's barca from 2003-2008. Legend.

Louis van Gaal is one of those managers whose influence is much bigger than the way people casually talk about him. A lot of modern football traces back to ideas he normalized: positional discipline, structured buildup, academy integration, and role-based football where the system matters more than individual improvisation. What hurts his reputation with casual fans is that his football could feel rigid or emotionally cold compared to managers like Pep Guardiola, José Mourinho, or Jürgen Klopp. But tactically, his fingerprints are everywhere.
So basically ajax and Barcelona are the birth place of total football. In short birthplace Netherlands developed in Barcelona. Even Enrique was at Barcelona. Damn fcking Barcelona influenced football that much

I’m Dutch-Indonesian on my father’s side. I’m American but watched Dutch football growing up. My father would show me VHS cassettes of that 74 team. I was crushed when Spain beat them in 2010. I remember thinking my father will probably never live to see them win. He’s 85 now. I’m praying for a miracle this year. That generation of Dutch football fan deserve to see a World Cup win. 🇳🇱

I love how Titi's idol is van Basten, his best teammate is Bergkamp en he is a huge fan of Ajax '95, Ajax and Dutch football and coaches in general. Cruijff is the biggest person in football, ever. Not only for his football, coaching but his view on football in general. I am proud to be Dutch and Ajacied (Ajax-supporter). Even though we have had some rough times lately, watching these footage and hearing people speak about Ajax, makes me so proud. I dream that Guardiola once decides to coach Ajax for a few years and enforce Total Football on Ajax once again. A man can dream, right?

Thank god that Thierry mentioned Rinus Michaels, everyone thinks Pep is the father but total football has such a long history
Let's also not forget that it was Van Gaal that turned Bayern from a counter football team into a total football club in a matter of months, winning the Bundesliga and getting to the CL final. Let's also not forget he beat Milan 3 times to win the CL and did it with a really tiny budget club as was Ajax at that time. That is very different from Guardiola who always had the best players and biggest stars, that has it's own challenges I know, but making a club or national team punch massively above it's weight is the greatest thing a manager can do.
As a Dutchman myself, I cannot thank you enough Thierry for explaining this and give our Dutch legends a praise which they deserve. Were a small country who doesn’t have the financial power and we don’t have a big pool with talents. So, and this is actually in every aspect of life, we have to be innovative trying to catch up with the big money. And out Dutch heroes getting praised by a legend of the game, is something we love to hear from time to time. Thank you Thierry❤
