Unbelievable Depreciation: We Bought a Lexus GX 550

Autos and Vehicles

After a year and 22,000 miles, is the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail really the ultimate adventure SUV? We reveal its true cost, off-road capability, and a shocking resale value. Appraisal Tool – https://www.edmunds.com/appraisal/?utm_campaign=qr_code&utm_source=youtube Car Listings – https://www.edmunds.com/new-cars-for-sale/?utm_campaign=qr_code&utm_source=youtube Ratings and Reviews – https://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/?utm_campaign=qr_code&utm_source=youtube 00:00 Intro 00:51 What We Got 01:46 What We Liked 06:07 What We Didn't Like 09:33 Reliability & Maintenance 10:29 Value 11:49 Edmunds' Take It's been a little over a year since we added this Lexus GX 550 Overtrail to our One-Year Road Test. We paid just over $72,000 for this brawny SUV with our own money, living with it day in and day out for 22,000 miles to see what it's really like to own. From the daily commute to tackling technical trails, we put this Lexus GX through the wringer. Let's start with the good: This thing is a phenomenal off-road adventure truck. Compared to rugged rivals, the Lexus GX 550 is cushier and way more comfortable, while that twin-turbo V6 engine is an absolute sweetheart. It handled sandy washes, steep hills, and everything in between without breaking a sweat. Plus, we experienced rock-solid reliability — our truck dodged the V6 engine recall, and our routine maintenance was easy and completely complimentary. But it's not perfectly polished. If you're expecting a plush, traditional luxury ride, you might be disappointed by the bouncy freeway manners. You also have to be prepared for the price at the pump; we averaged just 17.1 mpg, and premium gas gets expensive fast. We also had a few gripes with the interior tech, specifically the permanent climate control row taking up valuable screen real estate. So, what's the final verdict on the 2025 Lexus GX (and our 2024 model)? It all comes down to value. We were stunned to find that after a full year, our GX only depreciated by about 5%, with an appraisal of $68,000. It's one of the best investments we've ever made. Despite the GX's thirsty engine and truck-like ride, everybody in the office wanted to grab the keys to this one. If you want unmatched utility and charm, this Lexus is hard to beat. Reliability and low repair costs are paramount in resale value. Folks at mercedes/bmw need to wake up if they want to stay competitive, people that have money dont want to waste money on overpriced repair costs. Also high-resale value improves brand perception, being of high quality

Why have you only had 1 service in 22,000 miles of ownership?

It’s offensive to lie about price on these. If you can get one you’re lucky. You’ll pay no where near msrp. Plan on spending a 100k with pre set packages.

This is hype/supply-side driven depreciation. I would expect it to be good in the years to come, but not this good. Especially when there's a generational revision. Then the first gen will depreciate more assuming gen 2 isn't viewed as inferior. But this depreciation tracks. I have a 2022 GX460, premium plus fully loaded with 13k miles coming in, and it cost me 56 before shipping on a car that was 63 brand new in 2022.

You change your hairstyle as much as I change my underwear. And I change my underwear at least twice a week 😂

The Land Cruiser, which you barely mentioned, is better in every measurable way sans the battery compartment in the back. Better fuel economy, same size usable screen with physical buttons, and all of the offroad goodies as the Overtrail+ for far less money (a standard GX doesn't have the offroad stuff). Plus, the 2.4L hybrid powertrain that only has 23 less HP than the GX's 3.4L has been used globally since 2021 and not had a single recall anywhere in the world. In short, if you can afford a Land Cruiser, you can afford and will cross shop against the GX. If you see someone with a square headlight LC, just ask them why they didn't buy the GX and they will be happy to tell you.
