You kind of negated to mention the difference between series hybrids and parallel hybrids. You were basically describing parallel hybrids in this video. However a series hybrid uses all electric and THEN It starts to use gasoline once the electric depletes. A regular parallel hybrid you go nowhere without gasoline, whereas a serious hybrid is all electric until again you run out. I'm a big fan of PHEVS myself (series hybrids).
