I lived in England for 8 years being an American. My first year there I squirreled box of fireworks from Tesco's away from Guy Fawkes Day. July 4th I set them off my neighbors came out and asked what I was doing... I said I'm celebrating America's independence from England. They went back in their house came back with more fireworks and beer. Also that day my wife who was British told me not to come into the kitchen she was making a surprise for the day and made a turkey dinner with all the trimmings... I didn't have the heart to say wrong holiday.

As a Brit in America, i once had a man from Jamaica say to me at work "we have an independence day holiday because of you guys" i says to him "so does everyone in this queue! You arent special" and we laughed and became friends :)
