Medieval art defender here, I just had an exam on this, this kind of art is only from the high middle ages. It was made like this on purpose because, in a time of mass iliteracy, sending a message was more important than the overal look of the art. Also yes, some times It was for laughs.

The fact that all of the art during Medieval is, we can say ugly is because during this period the goal was not to be correct in proportion or to be realistic but just to deliver a message example kings were very tall to say that those were important also to keep in mind a great moment for exemple war. If I understand correctly m'y history teacher, so correct me if I'm wrong

medieval artists drew many things uncanny because there was more of a focus on the religious aspects of the artwork rather than the creative or realistic expression of such. the music is the same way; i learned about this in one of my music-related college classes.
