Growing up Irish, you're trained from the start to be ready to deliver or receive the joke in any interaction. It's like an extra social motor that's always running in the background, ready to catch or throw.

Apparently when Conan took a DNA test he was 100% Irish. Very rare according to the tester.

I am very Irish American, not 100% like Conan but somewhat inbred. I went to Ireland years ago and was astonished at how many of the older gents reminded me of my own dad. My dad’s favorite pastime is trying to make strangers laugh and start conversation. When I was over there, an older man approached me on a hike like a giddy school boy to play a prank on his friend. He told me to walk over to his pal and say “Hi, I’m Sharon!”. That was it, no context or anything. I obliged because I was used to my dad’s own antics. I did the bit and his friend burst out laughing. I never heard the punchline of the “hi I’m Sharon” joke, but I kinda like it that way. I told my dad the story and he burst out laughing in the same way. Who tf is Sharon?

Yes, and he was born in the US, and lives in the US, so he's American. He has Irish ancestry, but he's not Irish. Nobody from other former colonial cultures do this. Do Americans do this because they are ashamed of being American?
