HyperBOOST Project Achievements: In Situ Observations for Coastal Satellite Validation

Activism

HyperBOOST (Hyperspectral Bio-Optical Observations Sailing on Tara) was a large-scale European field campaign collecting high-quality in situ measurements to support the next generation of satellite ocean colour products, funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). Between 2023 and 2024, scientists sampled 202 coastal stations across 21 European countries aboard the Tara schooner, as part of the EMBL Traversing European Coastlines (TREC) Expedition. The campaign covered the Baltic Sea, North Sea, Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and open ocean environments, creating one of the most extensive coastal bio-optical datasets collected in Europe. HyperBOOST provides hyperspectral bio-optical and biogeochemical observations that support: Validation of satellite ocean colour products Development of new retrieval algorithms Improved monitoring of coastal waters Future Earth observation missions and marine science research This video highlights the achievements of the project, the scale of the sampling effort, and the contribution of the dataset to advancing coastal remote sensing and ocean observation. The HyperBOOST dataset strengthens our ability to understand marine ecosystems, improve satellite products, and monitor changing coastal environments across Europe. www.hyperboost.info With special thanks to the Tara Ocean Foundation: https://fondationtaraocean.org/en/home/ And the The European Molecular Biology Laboratory: https://www.embl.org/about/info/trec/expedition/
