SCREENING OF THE IRANIAN FILM The Day I Became a Woman AND DISCUSSION MARKING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY In commemoration of International Women’s Day (8 March) and in recognition of the enduring global struggle for gender equality, women’s empowerment, and social justice, the Universitas Foundation organised a screening of the acclaimed Iranian film The Day I Became a Woman (2000), directed by Marzieh Meshkini. The event was held on Monday, 17 March 2025, at the ARTos Foundation – Cultural and Research Centre in Nicosia. Widely regarded as a significant contribution to contemporary Iranian cinema, the film comprises three interconnected narratives that symbolically depict the experiences and challenges encountered by women at different stages of life. Through Meshkini’s distinctive cinematic vision, the screening offered a nuanced and critical reflection on issues of female subjectivity, gendered social constraints, personal autonomy, and the pursuit of self-determination within restrictive social and cultural environments. The screening was followed by an engaging discussion featuring Georgia Nathanael, Psychologist, Psychoanalyst, and Researcher at the Universitas Foundation, and Anastasia Giannakou, Gender Studies Scholar and member of the I Stand in Solidarity initiative. The discussion explored the social, cultural, and psychological dimensions raised by the film, while also situating them within broader debates on gender equality and women’s rights. The discussion was moderated by Katerina Hadjistylli, Historian and Director of the Universitas Foundation. The event commenced with welcoming remarks by Dr. Nikos Peristianis, Sociologist and President of the Universitas Foundation. The event formed part of the Foundation’s broader commitment to fostering critical dialogue on issues of social justice, human rights, gender equality, and democratic participation through interdisciplinary engagement and public discussion. ΠΡΟΒΟΛΗ ΤΗΣ ΙΡΑΝΙΚΗΣ ΤΑΙΝΙΑΣ «Τη Μέρα που Έγινα Γυναίκα» ΚΑΙ ΣΥΖΗΤΗΣΗ ΓΙΑ ΤΗΝ ΠΑΓΚΟΣΜΙΑ ΗΜΕΡΑ ΤΗΣ ΓΥΝΑΙΚΑΣ Τιμώντας την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα της Γυναίκας (8 Μαρτίου) και τους διαχρονικούς αγώνες για ισότητα και απελευθέρωση, το Ίδρυμα Universitas πραγματοποίησε την προβολή της ιρανικής ταινίας «Τη Μέρα που Έγινα Γυναίκα» (2000) της Marzieh Meshkini. Η εκδήλωση πραγματοποιήθηκε τη Δευτέρα, 17 Μαρτίου 2025, στις 18:15, στο Πολιτιστικό και Ερευνητικό Ίδρυμα ARTos (Λεωφόρος Αγίων Ομολογητών 64, 1080 Λευκωσία). Η ταινία, η οποία αποτελείται από τρεις αλληλένδετες ιστορίες, αποτύπωσε με αλληγορικό τρόπο τις προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζουν οι γυναίκες στο Ιράν, από την παιδική ηλικία έως τα γηρατειά. Μέσα από τη σκηνοθετική ματιά της Meshkini, επιχειρήθηκε μια κριτική ανάλυση της γυναικείας υποκειμενικότητας, των κοινωνικών περιορισμών και της διεκδίκησης της αυτοδιάθεσης. Μετά την προβολή ακολούθησε συζήτηση με τη Γεωργία Ναθαναήλ, Ψυχολόγο-Ψυχαναλύτρια και Ερευνήτρια του Ιδρύματος Universitas, καθώς και την Αναστασία Γιαννακού, Επιστήμονα Σπουδών Φύλου και μέλος της ομάδας I Stand in Solidarity. Τη συζήτηση συντόνισε η Κατερίνα Χατζηστυλλή, Ιστορικός και Διευθύντρια του Ιδρύματος Universitas. Την εκδήλωση άνοιξε με χαιρετισμό ο Νίκος Περιστιάνης, Κοινωνιολόγος και Πρόεδρος του Ιδρύματος Universitas.
