Beyond the F-Word: Rethinking Feminism Today

Activism

Feminism has never been a static idea. It evolves with every generation, every social shift, every challenge to power, and every redefinition of identity. What began as a movement for rights has expanded into conversations around representation, agency, education, work, family, law, culture, and the very ways we understand equality itself. At the 13th edition of the Metaphor Lucknow Litfest, the session "Beyond the F-Word: Rethinking Feminism Today" brought together academics, educators, activists, legal experts, and institution builders to explore where feminism stands today, and where it must go next. Joining the conversation was Dr Nishi Pandey, Professor of Eminence at the University of Lucknow and a respected advocate for women's empowerment. Adding a philosophical and scholarly perspective was Prof. Rakesh Chandra, former Head of Philosophy at the University of Lucknow, known for his work in human rights, feminist studies, and education. Representing the legal and human rights dimension was Adv. Aishvarya Mathur, a lawyer at the Allahabad High Court's Lucknow Bench with expertise in constitutional law and human rights. Bringing the perspective of educational leadership and institution building was Khwaja Saifi Yunus, Director and Secretary of Eram Group of Institutions, committed to expanding access to quality education. The discussion was further enriched by Dr. Surabhi Modi Sahai, education entrepreneur, researcher, and founder of Possible Education Pvt. Ltd., whose work examines women's representation in culture and media. Together, the panel explored difficult questions, challenged assumptions, reflected on changing realities, and examined what feminism means in an increasingly complex world, moving beyond slogans and binaries toward a deeper, more nuanced understanding of equality.
