I am EXTREMELY THANKFUL that I came across VLC early in my computer/media life! I HAD been using some Apple player AND a Windows player AND something else ... when VLC popped up out of nowhere and 'saved my life'! Thank you, thank you, VLC Programmers!!!

Did you know it also "plays" png & jpeg image files like a still image video? From what I remember though it sadly will not play animated gifs.
