The colorism and self hate are REAL! 😤
I always hated that Toni said this. 😭😭 Especially since shes beautiful. Its sad how colorism is still an issue in 2026🥴

I honestly liked that the show addressed this. It was heinous and uncomfortable, but it held up a great mirror. And colorism is such a worldwide issue in a lot of countries and communities.
Those in the comments saying that they didn’t like Toni bc she felt this way is one of the reasons this conversation was so needed. She felt this way bc she was insecure about her own skin color, and she didn’t want her daughter to experience what she did or worse. It doesn’t matter if it’s not your lived experience. It’s the experience of many dark skinned people, whether we choose to accept it or not.
Dark and Handsome is a Win
As a darkskinned black woman, i pray when i have kids they are darkskinned too. We are so beautiful. I love being darkskinned and no one is gonna make me feel like I am not good enough because of it.
I don't hate that she said this. I think it reveals something about society. She understand how life treated her as a dark skin woman. She's beautiful in spite of her darkness and the idea that her daughter would go through that is scary. The colorism isn't because she believes she's ugly or that he is. It's not what she thinks, she's saying what the world thinks
Honestly…this way of thinking amongst us brothers & sisters needs to cease to exist 😵.

A LOT of darker skinned Black men feel this way too. Hence why so many pursue non Black women. They just don't say it.
She's being honest. Black people are some of the most colorist people ever. Those who aren't dark and are bi-ethnic like most of the cast of Girlfriends are the ones who are chastising Toni but they don't have to live with all the jokes about being too black. In truth, I can almost guarantee Diana Ross picked Traci Ellis Ross' father partially because he was white and wealthy. The number of sites I have seen fetishizing and worshiping bi-ethnic people makes me sick actually. IRL my face is very fair but I change up colors like Beyonce and Riri and when I am in my darker stage I am chastised for allowing myself to become tan. People are strange. My mom is very light because her mom was really dark like the Dale Toussiant character and my grandfather appeared completely white though his mom was bi-ethnic and his father was a white doctor. The story gets tragic from there. His mom was run out of town under the threat of being murdered once the baby came out looking exactly like his white father.

I had a grown man say to me as an insult, “how are you light skinned and ugly?” and to top it off he was a black man! He wasn’t attractive himself so for him to throw shots at me, a black woman is beyond me and it speaks volumes on how he treats and speaks to woman. Ya’ll can’t forget that it REALLY be your own people that are truly the biggest colorists.
She said what many dark skin sisters experienced personally and they didn't want their children to grow up subjected to the comments and criticism from black people. My grandmother was biracial and light enough to pass. But she grew hated by both whites and blacks. So she tried to find a dark skin husband who was nice so her kids wouldn't have to experience what she did.
Real sh*t though. Thats how a lot of us are unfortunately. Thank God that I Never had that colorism mindset that a lot of my peers do and did. Some people do it on the other side thinking its cute and funny...but either way its a ws mindet. We're All black. All beautiful, no matter the shade. Dark, caramel or light. Dont matter. Yall gotta really stop with this light vs darkskin thing. FR. Its really disgusting. SMH 🤦♂️
