Not sold out in EU (GER).
It is now back in stock. I’m glad that Gaben both stocked the machine back so quickly, and undercut scalpers who rushed to make it out of stock previously. Still wish the price increase wasn’t hundred of dollars tho especially for something that is three years old mediocre spec.
I think part of it also might be caused by more competition in the segment. I cant say for certain but the increased competition might be pushing some of the other components like the displays, smts, pcbs and all that to have at least SOME impact on the BOM. I'm sure they might be looking for a little more margin on the product too of course.
If it weren't Valve I think people would be more upset with price increases. Remember Valve does have some of the highest profit margins and profit per employee in the business.
Update: It's not sold out in the U.S.
Apparently it's true that Gabe owns a mega yacht. It's just that it's meant for research and stuff. So it's not the luxury yacht that Tim Sweeney wants to you to think.
Gabe N can be a guy that's rich enough to buy a yacht and still be a good guy. Valve is seriously pro gamer
Well, there goes any hope for me getting any new hardware anytime soon. At this rate I'm just gonna need to find a new hobby.
I was hoping they would talk about the % increase. Its not surprising it went up, but isn't it unprecedented it went up by 50%?
Linus getting nervous over Luke quoting Forbes, knowingly damn well he’s a lot further from the average viewer than he’d like us to believe. How many of his viewers can afford a jet?
The price of chips have gone through the roof. Steam has to raise the price to break even. They were already selling the units at cost. Linus of all people should know and appreciate the cost of manufacturing.
Tim who?
What this reflects is valves incompetence to secure supply and deals and be able to manufacture this thing. Smaller companies are selling handhelds with far better specs for less money.
I'm so sad to know I'm never going to own one
I think people are scared of it going to $1950 in a couple months
Valve really should suck it up and make Steam Machine a loss leader. The compounding positive PR and industry momentum it would bring them would make up for that cost. I saw someone else suggest that it could be a higher price but include a $300 Steam rebate which also isn't a bad idea. I know they care very deeply about their cult (me tbh) and their optics, so I don't know if they should try to turn a profit on these at this point.
I’m starting to think valve should consider taking a major risk and take a loss on the steam machine and deck, just to get more users in the steamos ecosystem, present a decent case to the game publishers that a big chunk of their player base are now on steamos/linux, open up the kernel level anticheats on major triple A titles like CoD etc, snowball effect. The time is now to get users off windows. Proton is nearly perfect. It would be extremely risky but if they have the capital to make a loss or even just break even on the hardware for the meantime, it could prove massively beneficial for the future of the company and PC gaming as a whole.
The end of last year I knew this would happen and thankfully snagged my 1Tb Steam Deck before this. Sadly I didn't think SD cards would go up too so I didn’t grab a ridiculously large one before they shot up.
Right there with you Linus... I saved and i saved and i saved until i thought maybe i had even managed to over save, thinking "in March or maybe April I'll have my frame and maybe I'll even be about to get the upsized version and maybe even a higher end model of accessories and a game or two..." And now I'm wondering if I'll even be able to get the base model by itself, some time this year. This is crazy
I stopped playing CS2 so i sold my more expensive skins and decided to use that money for a steam deck so i could get something for my money. Steam deck sold out a day before my knife sold. I managed to get my hands on the steam deck and shipped in 3 days after the price increase. It was worth it despite the price increase. However, I'm still waiting on my steam controller invite almost a month later
