Considering that sound travels roughly 770mph, at that distance there is no possible way for there to be any kind of delay significant enough to impact the race. The sound of that gunshot is reaching every runner at basically the same time.

People don't seem to realize that speed is not that fast. Inner and outer stagger lines in 400 are around 50 meters apart so the difference in sound would be around 0.15 seconds half of that if it was shot in equal distance from both ends (in which case those somewhere in the middle would hear it first)

According to google, the average gap between 1st and 2nd in Olympic sprinting (the closest it’s going to get on average) is 80ms on the 100m, and 150ms on the 200m. In order for the gun sound to swap first and second in the 100m, the first and second place runners would have to be 90ft (27m) apart at the start. In order to swap positions of the 200m, they would have to be 169ft (51m) apart. Sound is fast. Now it isn’t to say it’s impossible, the closest finish (5ms in 2024) would only require the two to be 6ft (2m) apart. Which would only be two lanes. From the very inside lane, to the 8th lane is a ~28ms difference, with it being less as you get closer to the inside. A large majority of the time it won’t make a difference, but it can, especially at a high level on shorter distances. Which is why it’s probably good that something is being done
