i actually just did my final project on microbiology about that mystery item. if i’m correct (i haven’t seen that episode nor was i able to get a good look at it but the edible moss sounds like my project) its technical name is Nostic flagelliforme. its common name is fat choy! it’s a filamentous cyanobacterium that’s stringy and hair like but is an edible delicacy found in arid regions of China and Mongolia. they’re very adaptable to environments which is why they’re able to withstand constant dehydration and rehydration! when they’re wet, they’re actually a lighter shade (still pretty dark tho) and appear slimy. when they’re dry, they look like hairs and they’re jet black
