During the Tour of Flanders, a large group of riders crossed a railway line despite closed barriers and red warning lights. According to UCI rules, this is also prohibited and a far more serious offence than a bike being 20 grams underweight. Yet none of those riders were disqualified, whilst one of them, a certain Pogacar, went on to win the race. So much for ‘rules are rules’.
Agree with you, it definitely penalises smaller riders, same as the handle bar rule. You make a very interesting point in the tolerance of the scales……
7 pedestrians killed by collision with cyclists in London last year? That seems extremely high. I thought it ran to about 2 pedestrians per year across the whole UK. EDIT: Just checked the data myself on the TfL site. Since 1st Jan 2017, 8 pedestrians ("Casualty mode of travel") have been killed by cyclist collisions ("Vehicles involved in collision"). In 2025 ZERO pedestrians were killed in a collision with a pedal cyclist in London. For reference: 4 were killed by motorcyclists; 30 by drivers of cars; 3 by private hire vehicle drivers; 5 by bus/coach drivers; 11 by goods vehicle drivers; and 3 by drivers of other vehicles. you might want to double check your stats and issue a correction.
SD Worx weighed the bike themselves afterwards with their own scales multiple times and it was still underweight. It may be a stupid rule but the time to contest that isn't after you're caught breaking it
It is crazy that Lorena was DQed from the entire Giro for just 20 gms, just an insane application of the rule.

SD Worx made a mistake after swapping the bike 1 x. SD Worx didn’t even pre-weigh the bike themselves before the stage. They assumed it was fine because she had ridden a similar setup earlier in the season. Unfortunate but there it is.
If Wiebes had illegally blocked another rider in the sprint, she would have been relegated for the stage, but she would have been allowed to continue in the race. Instead, she was DQ'd for something she didn't do and that had zero impact on the outcome. The DQ aspect of the rule is asinine.

I’d like to nominate Keegan Swenson for hack of the week - repaired a hub and a tyre while coated in mud and not a zip tie or spare Dura Ace crank in sight.
I remember seeing a photo of one of former GCN presenter Emma Pooley's race bike that clearly showed the strip of lead wheel weights needed to get the bike up to the minimum weight. I'd be willing to wager that a couple of weights came off Lorena's bike in a crash or just in the normal course of use.
A few years ago on a London to Brighton ride, I hit a pothole just before hitting Ditchling Beacon. My quick link somehow exploded off my chain. Only one mate stayed behind, the rest powered on, not looking back. I searched the road for a good few minutes, and beginning to face the fact that I'd probably be needing a taxi, I somehow found both half links amongst the road detritus. I even managed to catch and pass one of the mates on the climb. To this day I've no idea how I found the link.

for a stage race they should change the rule from disqualification to give the last position and time of the last rider to arrive in that stage.

Had you considered that the commisaires know it's a big decision at a big race and that your line suggests that they felt they had no choice? The reports of the bike being weighed several times suggests the same? Stage type, weight of rider, time of day, weather are all irrelevant... You have to have a cut off and your point about SDWorx is bang on.
Apparently Wiebes rode with a single instead of a double front chainring. While the penalty is too much, SD Worx were just a bit stupid to begin with
