I had a Tesla model y stuck on a retaining wall , it took me a while to figure out how to leave the door open to rescue vehicle without scratch . Not every day thing but still simple things last longer

Same gripe initially but then I realised you can just go underhand so your thumb can still push the fat part of the handle

The answer to your question is automakers don’t put what they aim for into base model vehicles those handles are the cheap version of what they actually want to be representing which is the other two models the s and x with different style, but they look the same on the outside so those are just knock off door handles of those cars. I don’t know why he would think that’s what they actually wanted them to be.

My brother bought a new Tesla 6 months ago. When he chose the more expensive, larger, flashy wheels, they told him he'd lose 20km of range to look better. Aero is important on EV's. Apparently some folk struggle on the Nullarbor into a headwind.

3 year Y owner here ., I totally agree with you mate. The car is fantastic, the door handles since day one never made sense to me . And can be even with lowest chances a hazard in right time/place. It doesn’t even feel right in the hand. I do recall the Tesla chief designer stating that they’re in process of redesigning it .

Same thing for the turn indicator stalk, it tries to be clever (or different) and just ends up being annoying. The turn indicator is absolutely useless at roundabouts.

At the EV show I went too last year the most common question i heard people asking each other was "so how do i open the f'ing door!?". People were seriously getting annoyed about it.

The worst part is that those "mechanical redundancy" backups are in different places for every Tesla

Don't cars with central locking also need a solenoid to unlock the door as pulling the handle does nothing when locked?

I went for a passenger ride in my mate’s Y and using the door handles was awkward. Also, I think the window goes down a little until the door is fully closed to allow air to escape. I think this caused the window to rattle a little.

The thing about all this super dooper technology they stick in cars is that its designed to fail and it will. Its only a matter of time. No fixing, just replace at enormous expense.

Actually, the interior electronic button and actuator are simpler and lighter than a mechanical linkage. Counter-intuitive, but true.

Classic case of form over function.
