Anyone walking through Berlin will come across people experiencing homelessness. Some have temporary shelter in emergency housing, while others sleep in doorways, on the streets, or on makeshift beds underneath bridges. Berlin has one of Germany’s largest unhoused populations. According to estimates, more than 50,000 people in the city lack permanent housing, and around 6,000 of them live permanently on the streets. The reasons for homelessness vary, from poverty, misfortune, and eviction, to debt, addiction, and criminality. Some try to make ends meet by selling what are known as street newspapers. Others have been living in the same public spaces for years, and are well-known in their neighborhoods, though not always well-liked. This documentary follows Bülent, Daniel and Manni, three men who grew up in Berlin and now find themselves without a home. Six days a week, Bülent sells newspapers outside a shopping center in the city's Moabit district. Everything he owns fits into a rucksack. Because he has no valid papers, he's not entitled to social benefits, so he lives on donations and the money he makes from newspaper sales. Manni, meanwhile, has spent years living in a tent pitched at Helmholtzplatz, a public square in the Prenzlauer Berg district. The park is his home, though city officials repeatedly force him from his camp. Daniel was forcibly evicted from his apartment six years ago. Today, he lives in a subsidized temporary apartment and is politically active in the fight against homelessness. The documentary follows these three men through their daily lives, capturing encounters with people who offer help and with those who turn a blind eye. It tells the stories of three Berliners whose lives have taken very different paths, but who have not given up on their desire for a better future. #documentary #dwdocumentary #dwdocs #berlin #housingcrisis #germany ______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Stop immigration closed your borders, and blame your social Governments 😮
talking but doing nothing to make substantial change; feel kind and warm in heart for 15 minutes then brush it away!
Many people never will know reality. This is not personal faul but environment, economy, influx of material stuff causing addiction, events that on person cannot prevent when policies, inflation and property privatization in in place. Society is isolated and going toward making finances out of everything even compassion.
This is miles away from what we have in the Balkans. I hope to see housing first policies in the EU.
Never give up ❤
Watching this reminds me of how lucky i am. Thank you dw. And hope those people can get out from this really hard situation
Praying for them and be happy as always🙏🥂
They blame migrants for all problems but this is the reality that they can't even shelter their own people but migrants they are hardworking people and they are changing their lives without government support by hardworking.
Just wondering what started to cause the homelessness to become a seemingly ever growing issue in even Germany? The situation in the US is just evident and plain for any third-party from the outside to see through. But Germany, hmmmm ... ? Really incomprehensible that things could get like this as presented in this documentary.
You can see how many people are involved with just one homeless person, the time, money and energy spent on managing these people through their hardships is way higher than just providing housing. But the governments are afraid if they start doing that they'll have to provide housing for everyone and wouldn't that be a disaster.
Great job DW!
🙏
Finland helped housing the homeless people first. Then, they dealt with the individual needs. Why isn't housing offered?
I dont think this is correct. Germany has given shelter to one million Syrians, so why are there German homeless? It doesnt make sense. Either they are not really homeless, or the German state does more for Syrians than for Germans.

Please continue with your wonderful work in raising awareness about these global problems about humanity.
Telling the truth to someone is a real form of invention too. Not every great invention is a machine, a technology, or a scientific breakthrough. Some of the greatest inventions in history have changed the way people live, think, and grow. Today, life is already difficult for many people. Employment opportunities are limited, work is hard to find, and many families struggle to make ends meet. In such circumstances, every decision carries weight, and often it is the children who suffer the most from the consequences of poor choices. That is why we should be careful with our actions and considerate in our words. No one deserves unnecessary pain or hardship. A little honesty, wisdom, and kindness can have a greater impact than we realize. Every decision should be made thoughtfully, keeping in mind not only ourselves but also those who may be affected by it, especially the younger generation.👣
Danke Ms Merkel !
In US we are told everyone in Europe has free national healthcare 14:08 . It is a model for all of us to aspire to.
Respect to everyone who treats people on the streets with kindness and humanity.
