Latin America has long been one of the most dangerous regions for human rights and environmental activists. Hundreds of people are murdered every year, in crimes that have a sad tradition on the continent. Some are linked to the anti-communist repression of the 1970s, as shown in the film "The Condor Still Flies." Back then, with the support of the United States, political opponents of right-wing dictatorships were kidnapped, tortured and murdered - part of a campaign called Operation Condor. Today, economic power in Latin America lies with multinational corporations, including those in the soy industry. Their enemies are indigenous peoples and landless farmers who demand the right to land and are therefore persecuted and criminalized as terrorists or killed by hired assassins. In 2024, 80 per cent of all murders of environmental activists recorded worldwide took place in Latin America. According to recent reports by the international NGO Global Witness, the region remains the most dangerous in the world for human rights and environmental activists. Director Anna Recalde Miranda searches for the roots of this violent conflict. Her journey between the past and the present sheds light on the origins of today's ecological disaster and the violent oppression of indigenous peoples and activists. The tactics in this conflict may differ from those of 50 years ago, but the structures are the same: landowners and multinational corporations secure their interests with the help of the police and army. The shadow of the condor still hovers over the Latin American continent. #documentary #dwdocumentary #dwdocs ______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Just Say No... to Communism.
USA trained Paraguay Army.
I don't understand how anyone can claim the dictatorship is over and democracy has returned when stroessner's Colorado party has been in power for all but 4 years since 1947...I mean, come on. If they were a left party they'd have been overthrown by u.s. backed fascists by now but since they're right wing it's fine that they have a lock on power. Such hypocritical imperialist capitalist bs. They've been in power longer than the socialists in cuba but since capitalists are in charge in Paraguay but not in cuba one is alright and the other isn't. Ecosocialism would solve a lot of the problems presented in this doc.
If a child is born and suffers until death, the responsibility lies with the parents, not society. Today, nobody truly cares—everyone is too busy hating each other instead of showing compassion.
Agrobusiness corporations like Bayer and Cargill only care about enriching themselves, often with the complicity of governments in poorer nations such as Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, and Bolivia, because they know how easy it is to exploit people's natural resources without consequences. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. government, along with powerful shareholders, benefit as long as social and economic injustice persists. It is horrendous, criminal, and obscene that corporations, the United States, and unethical land grabbers have continued to get away with murder/destruction of the environment for decades.
Another world is possible & on its way, where righteousness dwells (2peter3:13)
landowners and multinational corporations secure their interests with the help of the police and army. The shadow of the condor still hovers over the Latin American continent. Just like in the USA now
Ah yes.. Another Kissinger's legacy
Good thing it can't happen here in the US. 🤔
