"be yourself as X" is absolutely the best advice I got as a beginner in improv (maybe I'm still a beginner who knows), it's hard enough trying to listen to your scene partner(s) and keep the reality of the scene around WITHOUT also trying to invent an entire character you need to stick to. as I started to get more experience "yes, and"-ing people, it became easier to try and nudge aspects of myself in different directions to try and fit different character archetypes.
