Can you build a shelter in the desert without even a single tool? No axe, no saw, no shovel, no knife—just bare hands and the raw elements of nature. In this episode, I set out to build a traditional nomadic shelter in the heart of Iran’s desert, using absolutely nothing but what I could find around me. This shelter, known by local shepherds as a “Koleh,” is an ancient design still used today for protection against extreme heat, freezing desert nights, wild animals, and venomous creatures. The arched sticks used in the frame may look like sturdy branches, but they’re not trees. Most are old, brittle, half-eaten by worms and ants—leftovers of nature, not lumber. Don’t be fooled—they’re fragile and full of decay. Despite that, with patience and perseverance, I managed to raise a functional shelter. It’s not fully finished yet and needs more support, but it already shows the wisdom behind this traditional structure. As the sun set, I cooked a simple but delicious local dish called Gharoot using sheep’s ghee, right inside the shelter. Later, we made fire-brewed tea and roasted some desert potatoes by the flames—just like the old nomads did. This is more than survival—it's a step into a timeless way of life. Come along and experience the raw, real world of Iranian nomadic survival.

Guy's, this is a survival method video, not a documentary on what Iran is like. People in Iran (as far as im aware) generally do not have to rely on makeshift shelters made from dead brush. Furthermore if people were doing that across generations you'd think the methods be more refined than "Just make it work so we don't freeze to death"
wish it showed how he got the branches to stay up like that
What really stood out is how much of this relies on understanding the land, not fighting it. Without tools, every small choice matters — I’m curious which part people think would be hardest to get right on the first attempt.

Based on traditional nomadic food preservation methods, some Iranian nomad foods do resemble rocks, particularly "kashk"—a hard, dried dairy product made from yogurt.
