SS Ohio - part of Operation Pedestal arrived in Malta on August 15, 1942. It saved the island and the ship (and convoy) have an almost mythical status amongst the Maltese.

Had a friend who changed from being an active officer, to being dropped behind the lines to rescue lost soldiers and bring them back (in Italy). He said as an Officer his job was to convince soldiers to die.

If he's talking about Operation MG1 then it was nearly a waste anyway. They didn't start unloading them right away because it was night time and no one there took the initiative. They started to unload them but it was too late, they only got 4,952 short tons of the 29,500 short tons unloaded before the ships were sank in harbor by air attack.
