The sad reality is in real life. A person that drinks as much as Homer if he tried to just quit cold turkey like that. Even if it was only for a month it could actually put him in the hospital. Alcohol withdrawal can kill you. You basically have to slowly limit yourself until you cut it out completely. You can't just cut it out entirely
