Herding dogs take advantage of this instinct. By moving around the edges of the flock, the dog creates pressure that encourages the sheep to shift in a particular direction while staying grouped together. A skilled sheepdog doesn't need to bark constantly or chase individual animals. Most of the work comes from positioning. The dog reads the movement of the flock and adjusts its own location to influence where the sheep go next.
