Sitting on freezing concrete to eat lunch in freezing Victorian winters is a core memory. Never thought to questions it until now, that's just how it goes.

my State primary school in Brisbane had wooden benches to sit at. my kids catholic primary school had benches in the lunch shed. But my state high school (also in Brisbane) had very little benches - we would sit on port racks or the concrete path. My kids high school also had limited tables and chairs and most kids would sit on the concrete paths

it is wild that we did that even in high school and never really thought about it, i feel if we had set tables and chairs it would lead to a lot more cliques, and that eating alone or with friends was never really anything when it is sit on the grass or a bench, or the quad or the oval etc.

Tables take up play space. Playing is important and picnics are fun.

I hated having to sit on the ground in assembly which sucked. But at little lunch and big lunch there were those long aluminium seats that most of us sat on. That's weird if they can't even sit on one of them.

Its for 2 reasons. Pre Aircon school was hot, sitting outside in the shade was a good option. Also Cafateria and lunch seating is expensive, usually schools will have seating for senior students but otherwise its rare for a school to have the budget for more than a few bench seats in the gardens or quad. You do see cafeteria style dining in most private schools although this is still usually outside in a shaded area. I assume indoor seating is more common in the US due to the weather.

The money saved on tables and chairs goes towards paying the teachers a living wage.

Interesting. At my kid’s QLD primary school they would eat in the classroom at the desks before they were allowed out to play. At my school in the 90’s we ate outside but there was lots of benches that were the designated eating areas
