The only thing I'll add that may actually be beneficial to you is to suggest an iron door into your indoor mines. That way you can be much safer in the house. Or heck, have a ladder three blocks down and the iron door is there and just a lever, leave the iron door open when you go down into the mine and close it once you return. Hopefully my description adds a good picture. Use a trap door for the ladders, too.
