*Fun fact:* To run on the course alongside the other athletes, pacers must be officially registered for the race. They wear a bib, they start at the starting line when the gun goes off, and they are subject to all the exact same anti-doping and course rules as the rest of the elite field. Because they are legitimate competitors on paper, their finish time is completely valid if they cross the finish line.
